| I have programs at the school that I own that start kids at the age of 3 for basic TKD training. Now, this is a 30 min program, twice a week, and they never get past white belt. What age do you feel is to young for 'real' martial art training?

| Hi Adam. First, I'd like to say I no longer own a school but owned and operated one about 10 years ago. Now I just train with others. That's a tough question because it really depends on the instructor and how the class is taught. I have always felt that any age below 5 or 6 becomes a baby sitting/social class for parents and not really for the child. Again...depends on the instructors approach it. I've seen some bad and good teachers in the age group. I would never call it a martial arts class but more of an activity class where they can be active, safe, yet with a form of obedience and respect. How do you approach your classes at that age?

| I have both child and Family classes at this point. No "Adult only" classes. Funny, I have not had the interest. Back in 'the day' we had 80-90% adults and a few kids, now the only adults I bring in are parents who see the fun their kids are having and want to join in. My kids class is for the ages of 6 to 10 and the Family class is not only 10 and above but kids under the age of 10 may attend if they have a parent attending the class with them. I truly believe that the life skills (Esteem, Respect, Self Control, Attitude and on) can be learned at an early age (3 and above) and the martial skills can be taught as early as 6 or 7 but I have found that not many of the 10 and below crowd can mentally pick up the training like some of my pre-teens, teens and adults.
