a black belt should know what they are doing and have the ability to show them with great techniques. But this is not always what we see in schools and tournaments. But this is speaking from green belt's experience

Sport Karate (3/4/2006) Give us your opinion. What does it mean to you?
It really means nothing other than to hold your pants up. Too many people put too much emphazised on Black Belt rank. Traditionaly, the rank came about so that Kano ( founder of Judo) needed a way to distinguish his seniors from the junior students. And us north american just found a way to make such a big deal out of it !

| Prince, if you want something to hold your pants up, use an elastic pants with string. Belts in the martial arts now are designed to signify progress, regarldless if you in North America or other parts of the world.

| Black belts are supposed to be good at skills and can teach those skills. It doesn't mean they will be bullet proof in a fight. It's not like black belts get into fight all the time to test their skills. Even if you're active in competition, whether its full contact or not, your not trully ready for real world situation...so don't be a hero when someone is pointing a gun or a knife at you.

| Good point, Scott. I think most or all martial artists are aware of that, but it's the people who don't practice martial arts that have blinded by the "black" belt. Everyone has a good point. Thanks!
