Hey, I'm curious...what exactly is style Kuntao all about? I've heard Chinese Kuntao and Filipino Kuntao. Is there a big difference, if any?

Basicaly Kuntao is a generic term for Kung Fu that is found mainly in Southern China. Thru trading and other immigrants from this country eventually brought the presence of this obscure art into the islands such as the Phillipines.
The influenced of this art in the phillipines I believed came mainly from the Indonesian influenced thru the art of Silat. The Philliphines are known for the arts of Arnis, Kali or Escrima ( Post-Spanish). However, the empty hands system of kuntao has been practiced privatly or secretly prior to its public knowledge of the arts existence.
Yes, there are many variations of techniques that can be differentiate in its executions. Words alone may be hard to descibe these variations. There several sources that you can go thru such as any PMA forums.
Hope this helps !

Here's what I got from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuntao)
"Kuntao is a term from southern China meaning Kung Fu. Purely chinese Kuntao styles exist in China and Taiwan, but kuntao styles have been spread for centuries by merchants and other travelling Chinese people. You can find kuntao styles in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Borneo, Singapore, as well as in some other countries. Some kuntao styles were not changed but many were. This happened because the styles had to be adapted to a new environment, fighting in different terrain, fighting local styles, defending or fighting with local weapons. Some Indonesian kuntao styles began to integrate techniques from Silat styles and some even changed their name from "kuntao" to "silat"."

| Is Kuntao a popular style here in the US or has it become a specialized art? I don't hear about it that much.
